E3 2011: A Closer Look At Call Of Duty: Elite

Posted 2 weeks ago By Cleaner7

Activision had a presentation for Call of Duty: Elite during E3 and everything shown was free to players. The system has been in development for two years and Beachhead Studios has worked closely with Treyarch using Black Ops as a testing ground, prooving this wasn’t just a backhanded program slapped together for a quick buck. A beta for Elite is set to launch on July 14 and players can apply here for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC.

The closest system already on the market that one could make a comparison to Call of Duty: Elite is BungiePro, where player’s can choose to pay for premium services, but in no way is it required. Consider COD: Elite as having two tiers: the normal free version and a premium paid version. Paying for the premium tier will earn gamers free downloadable content like map packs and they’ll have access to more competitions where real and virtual prizes are up for grabs.

Elite was divided into four sections (Career, Connect, Compete, and Improve) so we’ll break down some features of each below.

Career is the main destination of Elite and it serves as a player’s pseudo “baseball card”. A summary of games played and in-depth statistics (K/D ratio, win percentage, amount of kills/deaths/assists/headshots, XP score, score/minute, etc.) are easy accessible and comparable. Gamers can even then use the level calculator to estimate how long it’ll take to rank up based on current stats.

Matches from the past 30 days are tracked in detail including heat maps and timelines of kills and deaths. The amount of stat tracking is utterly staggering and dedicated players can analyze and improve their techniques using the data or tutorial, but more on that later.

The stats aren’t just for personal use either. Search any player by name and compare stats with them. A leaderboard tracker is built into the system so you can click a stat and see where you rank amongst your friends and enemies in a basic graph. Tired of that person who dominates every stat? Delete him from your personal leaderboard to reflect more favorably on yourself.

Connect functions as a social networking tool. Not to be confused with clans, Groups link gamers with common interests together. Simply enter a search term like “Whiskey” or “Lakers” and join an existing group, or create your own. Users can join up to 64 groups and/or 1 clan. A clan can house up to 100 users, whether they are free or premium subscribers.

YouTube is integrated into the service so you can login with your account and share videos or even tag other players from the videos. Right now, Elite supports YouTube and Facebook connections, but Beachhead is open to exploring other networks (such as Twitter) too.

Compete houses challenges where gamers can battle for prizes. Described as a “fantasy football” equivalent, events have set time frames for players to complete tasks involving in-game skill or creativity. Some examples given were earning the most kills in 24 hours or even a cool screenshot contest. Prizes can include items like an iPad 2 or digital goods like badges (again, tying in the baseball card analogy) to display on your Career player card. Competitions are open to both free and premium users though premium users will have additional, exclusive events available.

Improve supplies tips for elevating your skills. View instructional videos on the various aspects of multiplayer like maps, weapons, perks, and loadouts. Also, you’ll be able to customize your loadouts, provided you’re on the go on a supported device.

The system will be accessible on consoles, PC, plus Apple iOS, Android, and tablet devices. I asked if the premium subscription will contain a one-time fee or monthly subscription but they had no pricing to announce at the time. Although Beachhead did state that different options will be available to consumers. Map packs will still be offered a la carte for free users.

Depending on the price the premium option looks to provide an attractive alternative for hardcore COD players looking to enhance their online experience, especially since they (most likely) buy every map pack anyways. More importantly, multiplayer is still free to all players. Nothing is changing for players who simply want to play their game and pick and choose whether or not they want to buy any DLC.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Elite launch on November 8.
